Are babies who are exposed to cigarette smoke in the womb predisposed to start smoking?

I’m not pregnant and smoking and evil, just curious.
Thanks.
Not what I asked.

Good question – most people these days don’t allow their babies to experiment with smoking to find out if they have a predisposition to it or not. In the old days, though, some babies did experiment with it: http://tinypic.com/usermedia.php?uo=J30RMM%2Fgx6SJb%2FAMgGXGAw%3D%3D

All kidding aside, exposure to nicotine gives you a tolerance to it, even years later. So, kids who were exposed to nicotine in the womb probably have a slightly easier time getting used to the nicotine when they try smoking. But tolerance to the drug varies widely among people, so it would be hard to tell if it were from prenatal exposure.

smoking is for stupid people and it would encourage the baby to start smoking in the future the the parent does

I don’t know, but the baby is born addicted which makes for a crying , whiny, fussy newborn.

no they won’t start smoking if that’s what you mean. If they start smoking, it might just be cause they think it’s alright for parents to smoke and that they started for a reason, peer pressure, smoking cause friends do it etc.. but this doesn’t necessarily happen, i have alot of friends who have parents that smoke when they were pregnant but they don’t smoke. I have a cousin who smokes and his dad, sister, bro smokes lol.

I doubt it. My mother smoked during all 3 of her pregnancies (I’m over 50, so this was long before they knew the dangers). Of the three of us, only one ever smoked.
Smoking is definitely a learned behavior. By the time the child is old enough to even think about smoking, any "addiction" or predisposition, if it existed at all, would be long gone by that time, I would think.
It’s a decent question, and I don’t know if my answer is right. I only know what happened in my family.

i don’t think that would cause it… well crack babies are born addicted to crack, right? but so maybe it’s like that with the nicotine..?

oh i dunno, but it’s bad for the baby anyway. birth defects, etc.

    No they are not.
My husband is the perfect example. His mom smoked while pregnant with him and his 4 siblings. He grew up with 2 parents who smoked. Grew up in bowling alleys, and later in bars. Had 2 siblings who smoked. He even married a smoker. 41 years old now, and he has never smoked a day in his life. Smoking is a choice. Not something inherited. You can choose because you grew up around it, or your friends did. In my case, I wanted to be like my older sister. He just said no to all of that.
    Choices. We all have them.
