government- and taxes on food and cigarettes. santa fe bureau chief gadi schwartz is live at the roundhouse with what’s going on right now. gadi. no break for lawmakers as they round the final stretch. both the house and senate now have passed their versions of how to balance next years budget. and when it comes to taxes- and cutting- they are very different. today the senate passed a budget fix that would rely on a 1 dollar a pack cigarette tax and a tax on certain foods- that would bring in about 170 million in new money. the senate plan@÷@8 also cal?ls for big cuts in state jobs-? and spending cuts in state agencies.?o?o?o?o?o the house- is easier on those cuts – but relies on some bigger tax revenues- their proposals include a temporary increase on the state gross receipts tax – and a tax hike for the states wealthiest. at some point in the next day or so- leadership in both the house and senate will go behind closed doors in conference committee – to hammer out a compromise…

Raising the tax on cigarettes has always been an option. But the higher you raise the tax the less
people smoke ( other than Barrack Obama). Thus revenues go down. In Canada they have no
anti Smoking program because that would be a bigger strain on their health care system.
You see you wait months for tests and operations..so you die off before you can cost society.
Until teachers are willing to be judged on performance we are just throwing money against the tides.
Teachers have IRON CLAD pension plans.
Good for them.. All we need are more saps like us to pay for them and other state and federal workers.

Is it me or the price of newports has gone up but why the reason I smoke cigarettes cause I have a lot on my mind and have a stressful life and of pisses me off when someone does that

Both the wholesale price and taxes took a big jump recently.

I suggest getting stressed about dying 10 years too soon because of heart disease or cancer that you wouldn’t get as a non-smoker.

All the taxes for cigarettes goes to states to help curb smoking and to help defray costs associated with cigarette smoking. What will happen to those needed tax dollars when people quit enmass. Not to mention the fact that how many thousands of people will be out of work and the government will lose big tobacco corporations from the tax rolls.

Your answer is in your question. Yeah, the revenue will decline….just as you say. I do wonder if the politicians have thought of the consequences? Worth the result in any case. Good question.

They are already taxing alcohol and are thinking of taxing sodas because they think sodas cause obesity. They probably have not checked the sugar content of fruit juices and carbohydrates.
If they were really doing this for health reasons fruit juices, cereals, white bread, pizza etc all would be banned.

Okay so a few things…

Is there a general alcohol/cigarette tax in the U.S. (not just from state to state)? If so, then what is it?

About how much does the U.S. currently make on these taxes?

Any information would greatly help. Thank you!

There is a federal tax on each, but there is also a state tax, and those differ from state to state!

Cigars and smoking tobacco carry a whopping 30 percent excise tax.
Governor Patrick’s proposing a 110 percent increase for cigars, and 120 percent for smoking tobacco.
