I’m no fan of sin taxes but where tobacco is concerened, it cost our economy (all of us) for these people to smoke. They do it for a lifetime, albeit shorter than it should be, develop serious medical conditions that cost us all. Think of it as a user tax. They aren’t paying anymore than our society has had to pay to combat their self induced illness.

It is soooooooo sad. I know that they have some deals at the state level, which may be funded by the Feds to help with stopping smoking. i know actually people who have "gone through the program". It consisted of them calling the people, then they send them some literature and then a lady would call once a week and ask them had they quit and then tell them it was hard to quit and they understood. I told the people to tell them to spring for the patch or the chewing gum or something to help get the monkey off their back.
The people said they couldn’t do that, so I called them and found they were getting millions to do this and what help was it, none that i know of as they all smoke.
I think they should have a doc give them the tobacco patch or whatever. in the long run it would save on hospital costs. But then again many states made a deal with the smoke companies that they got paid money and it goes to help sick people. But like in my state the idiots have already blown it, $500 million (about).
So i know rich people that smoke, but for the poor they will have to do what they can to get a fix as tobacco is the most addicting drug there is they say. Understand where lyou are coming from, but politicians and I doubt Gitmo will be closed soon. References : opensecrets.org
