How do I remove a stuck car cigarette lighter?

cigarette lighter Add comments

My car cigarette lighter is stuck in its socket. Using force is pulling the whole panel out. If I push the lighter in to charge, it does pop outward after charging, but not enough so that it can be removed. I am unable to use my GPS unit or other devices that need to be plugged in to the lighter socket. Please help!

I have just done this to my Ford. First …. check the fuses ….twice.
The inner part of your lighter is separate from the outer which is hidden behind the panel and is holding the lighter in. First pull the plunge part of the lighter out then you will need to try to get in behind the panel and turn the outer casing with a set of multi grips while holding the inner casing still with something similar, or vice versa. You should only have to unscrew a few screws to get access behind the lighter and once you have a hold of the lighter it should not take much to twist. The Auto shop will charge you $100 bucks to this simple job. And yes DON NOT put WD40 on it.

Try a squirt of WD40 around the edge. Let it sit for a bit then gently twist/pull on it. You could also pry it up a bit with a butter knife screwdriver or something similar. good luck

Why don’t you just go to an auto parts store and buy another lighter and just take the old one out and throw it away. It would save you a lot of headaches and save you from spraying anything in it and taking the chance of shorting out your electrical system.

do NOT spray wd 40 on lighter, wd40 is flamable! if the entire lighter is stuck in socket, but will turn in socket but not pull out take a very thin table knife or flat piece of plastic and slip it into the gap between the lighter and socket then rotate the lighter slowly while pulling outward, most lighter inserts have small tabs that protrude slightly ( so your lighter doesn’t just fall out when you hit a bump) these may be bent out slightly more than normal and not allowing you to remove. if this does not work. if you can reach around to back of lighter, remove wiring plug, and hold the metal cover that is on back(like a metal tube) while turning the lighter assembly from the front counter clockwise to unscrew the entire thing from dash panel. these can be purchased at most auto supply stores for replacement.

Im curious as to what year your car is. The cig lighter is not meant for cell phone chargers GPS or anything but the cig lighter. These objects require a 12 volt filament. The filament has probably burned out causing the lighter not to release and it probably melted together. You will will need to take it in and have them remove it and replace the filament as well as the lighter.
