The cigarette lighter powers the device but the device plug that plugs into the lighter melts.
If it is not made for that kind of thing, Can I buy one that is, and is made to go into the car? All I can find is replicas of the original. Where do i find said lighter.

Add a 20 amp fuse in line on the positive side of the lighter. The older cars lighters required a higher amperage to work.
Hope this helps. Christopher

I want to run the MP3 plugin adapter (12 V) which runs thro’ the car cigarette lighter by using dry cells. Would that be possible? How many cells would be required?

First you need to get a 12 volt lantern battery, that will provide all you need. they have a large capacity. second. the wattage is actually based on the fuse. a 20 amp fuse gives 240 watts. Ohms law – Volts x Amps = Watts, a 25 amp fuse gives 300 watts, and so on. your mp3 adapter prolly uses very little power 50 to 100 watts, so you should be ok using a lantern battery. if you wanted to pack 8 AA batteries together, you could also do it that way, however, it will drain those 8 before it would drain the one lantern battery. if you do decide to go with 8 AA or 8 c’s or 8 d’s, (all will give 12 volts and enough current) go to radioshack and ask for the appropriate battery holders. this will make the project neater.

I bought a cigarette lighter and there is a place for it, but i don’t know where to connect the wires to =(
I got a positive wire with the lighter, and there is an extra positive wire coming from the CD player. But is there an earth? And where do you connect it?

the easiest way to do it and the safest for the car is to conect the wires directly to the battery. on the wire for the positive post you put an inline fuse holder for a 15 amp fuse. This way you dont ”break in” to the cars original wiring and make an expensive mistake.
there are 2 wires? the wire for the ”button” that touches the cigarette lighters heater element is the positive wire.
