I have heard that clinically, the connection between cigarette smoking and cancer was not proven until about 1981. Is this true?

Of course, most researchers believed the link was there long, long ago. But when were they able to prove it?

I am asking this question because I was thinking about the issue of cell phones causing cancer. Many people think they do cause cancer now, even though proving this could take a while.

Cell phones are different than smoking. Smoking left obvious signs of use behind – black tar in your lungs, for one. Cell phones don’t do this because they have no physical effect on you. The communication waves are not harmful. The radiation they emit doesn’t affect people. It just goes right trough. So while researchers had good reason to think smoking was bad for you, there doesn’t appear to be any good reason to think cell phones are.
