I need to install a socket for another cigarette lighter socket. I need to know what size drill bit would fit a socket lighter. Please post ASAP. I have a GM fitting socket ready to go, wires are set and ready. I just need to know the exact size bit to use. Thanks

I’m trying to get underneath the cigarette lighter socket in my 2005 Corsa SXi to see if its connected properly or replace it if nessecary, but not sure how to get under there? Anyone know how to? Thanks?

If the socket is loose, there is a metal ring that screws onto the lighter housing and tightens a bracket, clamping the lighter in place. If it’s not a loose lighter and you wish to check the electrical wiring, all you really need to do is use a test light to check the center contact inside the area you plug the lighter into. Many after market items such as cell phone chargers don’t always fit perfectly in the lighter socket and cause a brief short circuit and blow the fuse.

I’m talking about the actual unit and not the actual cigarette lighter. In my car, there’s a big hole where the unit is supposed to be. Where can I get one of these?

You can find one at an auto salvage yard.You can locate a salvage yard(used auto parts) through the yellow pages or the internet. It helps if you live in or near a big city.I recommend calling and verifying that the business has one available. Some salvage yards such as Pick a Part in Houston,Texas will let you remove the part yourself and then you have a good idea how to install the used part.You can also find universal cigarette light holder at most auto parts. You can probably order the part at a Chrysler dealer but it could be expensive.Good Luck

I have a 1995 Land Rover Discovery V8i – I’m taking it on a 2 month road trip through Australia and I’m worried the cigarette lighter socket might not last the journey. I need it for a power inverter and a 12v fridge (alternately) but I have little/no knowledge of auto electrics.

The question: is there a safe and easy way to install a second cigarette lighter socket direct from the battery/fuse box?

buy the lighter socket at auto parts store. buy 30amp fuse and holder. connect fuse to + bat terminal and other end to wire to lighter socket. you could use 30 amp circuit breaker instead of fuses. circuit breaker will reset itself. make sure you take extra fuses. take extra stuff just incase. sounds like fun.

I have a Rover 111i which was bought many years ago without a cigarette lighter socket. It would now be really useful to have one, so I can charge my phone and my Sat Nav in the car. I was just wondering how difficult it is likely to be and how to do it. It would also be useful to know, if it is too difficult for me, how expensive a job it is likely to be.

You should have three wires! one will be live and needs to connect to your ignition!
One will be a live that connects to your headlight circuit!
And the last will be your earth that you connect to the body!

I plug my radar detector and GPS into my cigarette lighter socket in my 98 Toyota Avalon, but they occasionally don’t get a steady power connection, so I am guessing the socket is loose. How do I tighten up the socket so it’ll feed a steady power supply?

On some cars, the male retainer behind the dash or console has to be held while the outside female receptacle socket is turned clockwise to tighten.
