American Lung Association Report Shows 2007 Shaping Up to be a Banner Year for Tobacco Control Policies.

cigarette smoking has been identified as the number one preventable cause of morbidity and premature mortality worldwide. Smoking is responsible for approximately one in five deaths in the United States. From 1997 to 2001, smoking killed an estimated 438,000 people in the United States each year. This includes an estimated 259,494 male and 178,404 female deaths annually. Among adults, the three leading specific causes of smoking attributable deaths were from lung cancer (123,836), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (90,582) and ischemic heart disease (86,801).

These statistics alone ought to be reason enough to warrant strong tobacco control laws such as cigarette tax increases and increased funding for tobacco prevention programs, but every year new studies show that the harmful effects of smoking not only effect the smoker, but also the workers and general public exposed to secondhand smoke.

This website is home to the online version of State Legislated Actions on Tobacco Issues (SLATI), which tracks state tobacco control laws, such as state restrictions on smoking in public places and workplaces and state tobacco taxes, on an ongoing basis. It is the only resource of its kind in tobacco control today providing up-to-date information on tobacco control laws in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. You can learn more about SLATI here.

Below is a list of just some of the reports and information on tobacco control laws and policy found on this site. Please explore the various areas and learn how to get involved in the important fight for strong tobacco control laws and policies. As many of the inspirational people who are living with lung disease will tell you, it’s a fight we cannot afford to lose.

Is it me or the price of newports has gone up but why the reason I smoke cigarettes cause I have a lot on my mind and have a stressful life and of pisses me off when someone does that

Both the wholesale price and taxes took a big jump recently.

I suggest getting stressed about dying 10 years too soon because of heart disease or cancer that you wouldn’t get as a non-smoker.

All the taxes for cigarettes goes to states to help curb smoking and to help defray costs associated with cigarette smoking. What will happen to those needed tax dollars when people quit enmass. Not to mention the fact that how many thousands of people will be out of work and the government will lose big tobacco corporations from the tax rolls.

Your answer is in your question. Yeah, the revenue will decline….just as you say. I do wonder if the politicians have thought of the consequences? Worth the result in any case. Good question.

Hey, I need a little help.

Okay so a few things…

Is there a general alcohol/cigarette tax in the U.S. (not just from state to state)? If so, then what is it?

About how much does the U.S. currently make on these taxes?

Any information would greatly help. Thank you!

There is a federal tax on each, but there is also a state tax, and those differ from state to state!

Besides cleaner air for us non-smokers ?
Agrippa the Roman …the health care savings alone will more than make up for the lost tax revnue

I think it gives a heads-up warning to lower and middle-class people who can barely afford cigarettes now. Maybe they will understand that cigarettes are too costly and spend their money on something beneficial. Though, their is some people out their who’d go to great lengths to obtain cigarettes and probably skip payments (now thats only of those who smoke many packs a day resulting in a large sum of their pay checks yearly),

There are taxes on cigs in all states. But some have a "USER" tax. I.E. If you live in IL but go to IN to buy cuz they’re cheaper. You have to pay an additional tax to use the cigs in IL. Lots of people in IL getting hit with big taxes now on this cuz they bought on the internet and shipped to IL. Wondering if all states have this tax?

The USE tax has NOTHING to do with cigarettes. EVERY state with a sales tax has an equivalent use tax that applies to ALL items purchased out of state. It is just enforced more actively for cigarettes.

How many people will CHOOSE better health ?

Me, my husband and many others. We do not feel we should be taxed to benefit another. If the money was going to care for smokers it would be a different situation. What comes next?

If you smoke a pack a day, the new tax will increase the amount you spend per year on cigarettes by $936. And the state might not even make money on it because how do they know that people won’t buy their cigarettes in Nevada?
I wasn’t thinking I’d go to Nevada every time I need a pack of smokes, I was thinking I’d go there every once in a while and stock up

sin crimes and blue laws are a b*tch ain’t they?

our rights are eroding because we don’t notice how the laws have sneaked around them… you are right to wonder.

I agree with all the smoking bans nation wide, but I feel that it is unfair for smokers to have the burden of all the additional taxes on cigarettes. I think also in order to get the health in this country in order they should start taxing junk foods, including fast foods!

I don’t think many people die from second-hand hamburgers. I have never seen someone intoxicated and driving froma milk shake.
