I noticed in early august @ the local CVS cartons were about $41 plus tax. I went again late Aug to buy a carton and it was now $44 plus tax. Someone told me that there was another tobacco tax increase in Aug 2009. Is this true?
I tried researching it online but can’t come up with anything. Anyone know a website that tells us california had raised the cig tax again and by how much?

All I found were articles about lawmakers pushing for a cigarette tax (dated Aug. 2009), but not any that stated any new tax in August 2009. There was a tax put in place earlier in the year…

It is true that the law of supply and demand dictates that a higher price means a lower quantity is demanded, but funding S-CHIP with Federal Cigarette Tax Increases is a Poor Tax Policy. A cigarette tax increase hurts the poor more than virtually any other way of raising money. High Cigarette Taxes Encourage Smuggling and Associated Crime.

It is often said that cigarette taxes should be increased because government needs revenue. Such an argument is possibly the worst used by advocates of higher cigarette taxation. Why not tax coffee or spinach or impose a tax based upon the number of blades of grass in a taxpayer’s yard? Just because the government needs revenue to fund some general spending program that has broad benefits doesn’t mean that an arbitrarily selected group of people should pay the tax. o_O

If not, what exactly is considered a tax on the poor?

Rich people smoke cigarettes too, don’t they? So it can’t be considered just a tax on the poor.

People refer to it as that because proportionately more poor people than rich smoke cigarettes. In that sense, I guess the label is accurate.

I’d consider lotto tickets even more of a tax on the poor. Hardly any rich or higher income people buy those.

i have heard from several people that there was going to be another increase soon in the tax on cigarettes. where can i find for sure.

You can count on it!
The liberals who know what is best for you will keep raising the taxes until they get the prices so high, people can’t afford them so they will quit smoking.
