It is true that the law of supply and demand dictates that a higher price means a lower quantity is demanded, but funding S-CHIP with Federal Cigarette Tax Increases is a Poor Tax Policy. A cigarette tax increase hurts the poor more than virtually any other way of raising money. High Cigarette Taxes Encourage Smuggling and Associated Crime.

It is often said that cigarette taxes should be increased because government needs revenue. Such an argument is possibly the worst used by advocates of higher cigarette taxation. Why not tax coffee or spinach or impose a tax based upon the number of blades of grass in a taxpayer’s yard? Just because the government needs revenue to fund some general spending program that has broad benefits doesn’t mean that an arbitrarily selected group of people should pay the tax. o_O

I know that back on April 1st, the Cigarette and Tobacco taxes were substantially increased.

Since then I’ve heard around that there is pending legislation that there will be another tax increase during the Fall/Winter months of 2009, but can’t find any evidence of that.

Anybody know?

There no more pending Federal tobacco tax increases at present. Those take an act of Congress and Congress is busy with other issues right now.

State taxes could increase at any time and that is were most high tobacco taxes exist. (The tax on a pack of cigarettes in NYC is nearly $6.00 when all taxes are added in.)

Wow, trolling for conservowackos is so easy. I need a challenge.

Um the $12 is simply a withholding reduction and since the tax code has not been rewritten – if you do not change your withholding you may owe money when you file your taxes in 2010. Educate yourselves please.

Ahhhh, the truth shall set you free! Very good points! 1 star for u.

They are properly called "hidden" taxes because they are secretly embedded in everything we purchase.

There will be no actual tax decrease for anyone. They are taking money from your left pocket instead of your right pocket, that’s all. In fact, if they do half of what they promise (threaten?), everyone will pay far higher taxes.

Does anyone REALLY believe that you can just fillet the rich for a 1.3 TRILLION dollar budget? I mean, come on people, think.

I like Sharon and Big Bears answers: Sharon doesn’t get that the new taxes are hidden or foolishly believes that her $12 a week is going to cover them and Big Bear just out right closes his eyes. Those taxes don’t count! LOL Big Bear, you slay me fool.

i think there should be a scaleat the grocery store, and if youre overweight, an extra tax on the food you buy. watch the fat melt off these people real quick.

im sick of seeing these people that are so fat, they need electric carts to get around, and surprise! they get SSI because of their gluttony.

What about an idiot tax.

You pay say $100 bucks. then every time you check out a book from the library you get $10 bucks. If you read a book a month you make $20 a year.

If you read a book a day you can afford to drive to the library

Its just like the minimum wage. There s a federal standard but each state have a different tax. Please help

There is no federal standard. ALL cigarette taxes are STATE taxes. You may as well ask why state income tax rates are different in each state. The only meaningful answer is: Because each state passes its own laws.

my friend told me that cigarettes are going upto 9 DOLLARS A PACK. insaneee! is this true? he said its part of a new tax.

we live in new york btw.

if this is true, that is ridiculous.
theyre about 6.50 where i am right now. but the rumor is thats its going upto 9 in a couple days.

In late March or early April of 2008, NYS proposed an increase in cigarette taxes by as much as $1.50 per pack. I do not know if the increase has been approved or if an effective date has been established. Below is a news release from 02April08 that will add a bit more info on the matter:

President Obama just signed a bill to increase cigarette tax to fund child health care, the first step towards universal health care.

Is this fair to those smokers who do not have children, never plan to have them? And why should smokers shoulder the entire burden?
If somebody can’t afford health care for their kids, STOP HAVING KIDS!
agree? disagree? why?

The bill is stupid.

There is no way the current number of smokers in the country could fund this bill. And the more they raise cigarette taxes, the more smokers will give up their habit. So how does that make sense to anyone with a brain?

Does that mean Obama wants people to START smoking in order to fund it? Or is it… as is more likely the case… his way to slip the bill in, because after all who doesn’t want to slam cigarette smokers more. But once the bill is passed and obviously not getting the funds it needs, then they can start taxing the rest of us even more. Because have you EVER known the government to stop funding their pet causes once they get a bill passed? No, they just raise taxes.

He just signed it. It’ll raise cigarette taxes by 61 cents a pack, and it’s for "the children." I would have expected better considering that Obama smokes himself. When does this actually go into effect? When do I have to start paying this?

The point is why are my taxes going to pay for childrens healthcare? I don’t have any kids. This schip law also covers illegal immigrants.
This is the beginning of Socialism folks. Make no bones about it.
We had better start putting on our thinking caps and start voting in true Conservatives into Congress and render this twerp of a President either powerless or go for Impeachment.
Obama and his Flock of Tax Evaders want to tax us to death.
Under this new law it is estimated that we will need 24 million more smokers to cover this stupid law.
I hope those of you who voted for the Obamanable Snowjob wake up real fast before he takes a torch to our Constitution.
He is now infringing on my right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and yours too. Wake up!
