All the taxes for cigarettes goes to states to help curb smoking and to help defray costs associated with cigarette smoking. What will happen to those needed tax dollars when people quit enmass. Not to mention the fact that how many thousands of people will be out of work and the government will lose big tobacco corporations from the tax rolls.

Your answer is in your question. Yeah, the revenue will decline….just as you say. I do wonder if the politicians have thought of the consequences? Worth the result in any case. Good question.

Besides cleaner air for us non-smokers ?
Agrippa the Roman …the health care savings alone will more than make up for the lost tax revnue

I think it gives a heads-up warning to lower and middle-class people who can barely afford cigarettes now. Maybe they will understand that cigarettes are too costly and spend their money on something beneficial. Though, their is some people out their who’d go to great lengths to obtain cigarettes and probably skip payments (now thats only of those who smoke many packs a day resulting in a large sum of their pay checks yearly),

i find its stronger than smoking normal cigarettes but is it more harmful?

Well in general all smoking is harmful.
Most people find that normal roll-ups are stronger than mass produced epsecially if there’s no filter. But i think it might because whatever brand of cigarettes your using the tobacco from might have a higher amount of nicotine. You’ll have to compare the chemicals used in mass produced cigarettes and the products for roll-ups.

Didn’t Obama say the tax on cigarettes would provide insurance for 10 million people- kids 30 years old and younger? What ever happened with that? Do you have insurance thru Schip program? Why do we need this overhaul of our system when there is more smokers now than there has been in 15 years!

Obama politics is driving people to smoke and drink.*

Obviously there are economic and social factors that preclude an outright ban on cigarette smoking. However, can you think of a plan to eliminate smoking over the course of many years?
Centurion: Relax. The question is, "Is there a way to accomplish such a mission?" A little jumpy, aren’t you?
PEOPLE: This is not intended as a debate over the pros and cons of smoking. This is strictly a strategy question.

Propose bills that would allow landlords to NOT allow their tenants to smoke in the units.
Make cigarettes SO expensive because of taxes that people would NOT buy them.
Ask family members of people who passed from lung cancer or other smoking related deaths to allow the family member’s images be used for a nationwide commerical, targeting smokers.
Institute fines for not disposing of cigarette butts properly.

I was working a race this weekend and was stung by a bee. Since I don’t smoke, I was asking a few people who do for a cigarette. Only myself and another person had heard about this. There were maybe 20-30 people. I was curious to see if anyone else had heard of doing this?

Nope. Just vinegar or mud or baking soda/water poultice. That one works the best… baking soda/water.

that if you have not started smoking regularly by age 20 that you probably never will start smoking. I’m 19 years, 8 months old. I’ve been smoking 1 cigarette like every couple of days for the past month and I do not feel addicted. I’d really like to become a regular smoker and I’m really feeling very pressured to smoke. What should I do?

They just say that because most people try it in their teens, so if they’re going to be come smokers, they know earlier. But you can start at any age, if that’s what you want. I’ve seen people start in their 20′s and 30′s. If you start now, you’ll probably become a smoker (though some people never take to it). But — why give in to pressure? If it’s something *you* want to do, fine, it’s your life and you know the risks, but pressure? I don’t know the nature of it, but I’d think twice before giving in.

The rise in cigarette tax for the health of our children.
I’m non-smoker.

Unfortunately, the people who proposed this legislation understand supply and demand about as well as a fish understands trigonometry.

When the cost of cigarettes goes up, people smoke less or quit smoking altogether. Then, the money that was supposed to go to health-care is gone. What do you think will be Congress’s response? Raise taxes on everyone, of course!

This reminds me of another piece of legislation here in Florida. The govt wasn’t making enough money on the toll roads so they decided to raise the price of the tolls. The problem is that now, nobody uses the toll roads because they are too expensive.

When most people stop smoking, how is the non-existent tax money supposed to pay for anything?

This legislation is counter-intuitive and it doesn’t make an ounce of sense.

A friend is smoking little cigars that come in a pack like cigarettes, and are very cheap. He is smoking them like cigarettes, more than a pack a day, wondering if they are worse for him than cigarettes, does anyone know? And yes I know all smoking is bad.

These little cigars are machine-made and are also made from chopped tobacco, like cigarettes. Yes, they are worse for him because there is no filter and he inhales them just like cigarettes.
Real cigars are made from full leaves and people don’t inhale when smoking.
