The Federal government has been taxing cigarettes at $3.90 a carton for years, so where the h*ll is that money?
Btw, don’t give me that old it is OK to tax cigarettes, this applies to lots of different taxes being raised.
That’s a very hard tax to track down! When SCHIP came up last year, I tried to find out how my state was using the cigarette tax money and <pardon the pun> it’s smoke and mirrors.
I’m doing an essay for school on the ban of cigarettes. I need some help finding articles discussing other things we could place taxes on in the place of the huge tax on cigarettes. We get so many tax dollars from cigarettes and spend it on nesscary things- where would we get this money from if not from the tax, and what exactly do we spend it on, anyway?

we could always tax fast food. pretty much every one eats it, and it horrible for your heath in the long run, like smokes. but its socially acceptable to eat at places like McDonald’s, so that would never fly.
what the tax is spent on, is up to individual states. hear in Arizona, most of it goes to early childhood education and welfare programs, plus anti smoking crusades. very little of it goes into medicaid.
We currently have 3rd lowest rate in US at $.18 per pack. Why would a state with some of the worst health issues in the US not raise tax on this harmful product?
I don’t know how it’s handled in MS, but here in MO it has to go to a vote at a general election. A huge cig tax increase was on the ballot back in November and it was defeated by a small margin.
Curious of the outcome, I asked around. Predictably I didn’t fnd a single smoker who voted for the tax. Surprisingly the non-smokers that I asked were about evenly split. Those who voted against it either said that it was way too high ($1.50 per pack) or that they were just against taxes in general.
i have heard from several people that there was going to be another increase soon in the tax on cigarettes. where can i find for sure.

The liberals who know what is best for you will keep raising the taxes until they get the prices so high,people can’t afford them so they will quit smoking.
The goons and criminals in Congress have once again decided to attack smokers..in the name of the children..of course. The democrats have lost their mandate in my eyes. Where is a libertarian when you need one? cigarette taxes hurt the poor far more than the rich and are regressive and stupid. I wish I hadn’t voted for single democrat ever (at least I didn’t vote for Obama). Bleh. Smokers revolt! In a time of economic depression, why hurt the poor where they hurt the most? Smuggling will be way up. Prohibition always fails eventually. Stand up for your rights.
