What’s the deal with the increasing cigarette tax?

cigarette tax Add comments

Just because you decide to smoke shouldn’t mean you have to pay for a stimulus plan. If that’s what this is all about.

No one HAS to pay the cigarette tax. You only HAVE to pay it if you want to buy cigarettes. It’s a choice, maybe not one people like, but it’s still a choice all the same. The tax is not on a group of people, it’s on a product that people elect to buy.

This country (our government) wants/needs more tax money. The way to get it is to tax things that people will buy no matter what. Ciggarettes are addictive, so people who smoked BEFORE the taxes, will continue to smoke AFTER – and therefore suck it up and pay the extra taxes. This isn’t just about the stimulus package, however. Taxes on ciggs have been going up for decades. I’ve smoked for a 7 years now (I should really quit) and I recall several tax increases.

Taxes are lower on things people "need" and higher on things we dont. For example, taxes on food are usually lower. There is also a rumor that the government may start taxing "junk food" like soft drinks and candy bars because of the money crisis and obesity epidemic!

Its because you have a filthy unhealthy habit that cost the rest of us an increase in health care costs. You will find little sympathy on YA for tobacco.

Congress passed legislation last year raising the tax to fund the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, but former president George W. Bush vetoed it.
In February, President Obama, who has struggled to quit smoking, signed a new version.
