my friend told me that cigarettes are going upto 9 DOLLARS A PACK. insaneee! is this true? he said its part of a new tax.
we live in new york btw.
if this is true, that is ridiculous.
theyre about 6.50 where i am right now. but the rumor is thats its going upto 9 in a couple days.
In late March or early April of 2008, NYS proposed an increase in cigarette taxes by as much as $1.50 per pack. I do not know if the increase has been approved or if an effective date has been established. Below is a news release from 02April08 that will add a bit more info on the matter:
Cigs are already $9 a pack in NYC. Most of that is tax.
Move to MO. We have the 2nd lowest tobacco tax in the nation — cartons of major brands are around $25 and the discount brands are as little as $14. Last November, the voters rejected an increase in the tobacco tax despite HEAVY advertising by the anti-smoking lobbies and the State. I was surprised by the number of non-smokers that voted against the tax, but Missourians are like that.
Oh, yeah, and I just gassed up for $3.63 this evening. I’ll bet you’re over $4.00 in the Empire State.

If you quit, instead of saving $6.50 a day, you save $9.00 and live about seven years longer. Take the hint!
