I certainly understand why cigarette smoking is taboo, even beyond its health hazards. But given that marijuana smoking is much more dangerous than cigarette smoking (smoking one joint is equivalent to smoking five cigarettes, in the last report I read), why is it considered fashionable and cool?
Cigarette smoking was only considered cool before they knew what horrible effects it had. As for pot, it is NOWHERE near as harmful as cigarettes for you. Cigarette related illness causes tens of thousands of deaths a year, while marijuana causes almost none. Anyone who thinks that you can’t live while smoking pot is a narrow minded idiot, unable to admit that marijuana should be legalized, just like those idiots that run this country. There are no cases of marijuana overdoses EVER, while thousands die from alcohol poisoning and drunken driving every year. I maintain a 3.8 GPA and am working towards a Masters in education, so don’t say that it "rots your brain." Marijuana should be legalized, and tobacco should be banned. Every country that has decriminalized marijuana has lower usage rates among its people than the US and the tens of millions of dollars that we spend on the "drug war" could be used to enhancing education and helping the homeless. Our whole country is screwed up and I feel bad for those of you who don’t see that.

That is so untrue. Marijuana is no where near as harmful as cigarette smoke. Look it up anywhere! Marijuana makes people feel good. =)

Nikki, generally when it takes less of something to cause the same amount of damage as something else, the substance it took less of is the more dangerous of the two. What your own figures are saying is that marijuana is five times as dangerous as tobacco.
As to the original question, tobacco lost its appeal when it became acceptable. smoking marijuana is considered ‘cool’ by a lot of peple because it still has the elemen of ‘walking on the wild side.’ That’s one reason I would oppose legalizing it. As long as it is illegal, kids who do it just for the sake of doing something illegal may not do anything worse.
Before you ask, no, I do not smoke tobacco, marijuana, or anything else. The only drug I’ve ever taken for non-medicinal purposes is caffeine.

Smoking Cannabis is a rebelious activity. And for the record 5 cigarette does not equal one joint. You can’t get cancer from smoking pot, you can’t overdose on pot (not one single case). How many deaths are there from alcohol and tobacco use? Being smart is always cool, and smoking pot instead of drinking alcohol will make you mellow, not violent and a douche like when people get drunk.

i just want to say in my experience ten years of both cigarettes hurt and give me black stuff to cough up and marijuana makes me ponder the origins of life in the universe and no nasty side effects and I’m still going to Berkley in spring 2008 so stick with the green weed it activates the cilia in your lungs and helps in many other ways and yea you can’t die from pot cigs you can and probably will.

First off, cigarettes are extremely addictive both physically and mentally. They also damage the lungs and have a LOT more artificial crap/filler than any marijuana. If you check some facts on marijuana versus cigarettes, or even caffeine… you will find that it is low on the list of dangerous ‘drugs’ in terms of risk.

cigarettes are much worse for you than marijuana. and i have smoked weed for many years but have never done it because it was the cool thing to do, i smoke weed just because i like to. i don’t think anybody should do something just cause they think its cool. i think most people start smoking cigarettes because they think its cool, then by the time they realize its not cool, they are already addicted.
